Mixed-SKU Auto Parts Orders: Carton and Container Planning

Mixed-SKU orders help an importer test more references and build a wider catalog without purchasing a full production quantity of every item. The trade-off is greater packing and receiving complexity. The solution is carton-level identification and a loading plan agreed before shipment.

Group products logically

Separate heavy metal parts from small seals, sensors or fragile plastic items. Group similar product families where practical, but avoid putting nearly identical left/right parts in the same unmarked inner carton.

Give every carton an identity

A carton label should include customer SKU, product name, main OE number, quantity, carton number and purchase-order number. For mixed cartons, use an internal packing list that identifies each inner package.

Create a carton-level packing list

Instead of listing only total quantities, record which SKU is in each carton. This allows the destination warehouse to locate shortages or damage without opening every box.

Control weight and handling

Do not fill large cartons until they become unsafe to lift or likely to burst. Heavy control arms, hubs and brake components need stronger cartons and internal restraints. State gross and net weight on the label.

Plan pallets and container position

Place dense, strong cartons low and protect lighter cartons from crushing. Keep frequently inspected or urgently needed items accessible where possible. Use pallet or container maps for large shipments.

Photograph the loading sequence

Take clear images of labeled cartons, completed pallets, empty container condition, loading stages and the sealed container. These records help both parties investigate shortages, moisture or transit damage.

Prepare the destination warehouse

Send the packing list before arrival so the buyer can create SKUs and receiving labels in advance. A well-planned mixed shipment should expand the catalog, not create weeks of sorting work.

During quotation, tell the supplier that the order is mixed-SKU and ask about minimum quantity per item, carton labeling, pallet charges and the expected number of cartons.
