“Shock absorber” and “strut” are often used as if they mean the same product. Both control spring movement, but the assembly and its role in the suspension can be different. That difference affects product matching, carton size, freight cost, installation and after-sales questions.
What a shock absorber does
A shock absorber dampens the energy stored by the spring. Without effective damping, the body and tire continue bouncing after a bump. A conventional shock is generally a separate damper and is not normally the main steering pivot or structural wheel-locating member.
What makes a strut different
A strut is usually part of an integrated suspension assembly. Depending on the design, it can combine the damper, spring seat and structural mounting points, and it may act as a steering pivot. A complete strut assembly can also include a coil spring, upper mount, bearing, boot and bump stop.
Do not compare incomplete and complete products
A bare strut cartridge, a complete loaded strut and a conventional shock should not be quoted as equivalent items. Buyers should confirm exactly what is included. Product photographs should show all supplied hardware and the carton label should use the same product description as the quotation.
Data required for matching
- OE number and any superseded numbers.
- Vehicle make, model, chassis code and production year.
- Front or rear axle and left/right position where applicable.
- Standard, sport, electronic or air-suspension specification.
- Whether the request is for a bare unit or complete assembly.
Commercial implications
Complete strut assemblies occupy more volume and usually cost more to ship than bare dampers. They may reduce workshop assembly time, which can make them attractive in markets where labor efficiency matters. Bare units can offer a lower purchase price but require the workshop to reuse or replace additional components.
After installation
Because struts can be structural suspension components, wheel alignment may be needed after replacement. Installation should be performed by a qualified workshop using the correct spring-compression and torque procedures.
